Jim Hefferan currently serves as E-Discovery Of Counsel with Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP. With over 17 combined years of experience in commercial litigation and e-discovery, Jim’s career spans a broad spectrum of industries—including sports, entertainment, media, manufacturing, and telecommunications—where he has developed a reputation for delivering practical, technology-driven solutions to legal challenges. In addition to his litigation expertise, Jim has authored numerous articles on e-discovery, legal technology, and sports law, and is a contributor to the KT LitSmart Blog, where he shares insights on emerging trends and best practices in e-discovery and pretrial discovery.

 

Between stints at Kilpatrick Townsend, Jim served as an Assistant Professor of Law and then an Associate Professor of Law at Charlotte School of Law, where he taught courses on Commercial Law, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Contracts Drafting, Introduction to the Study of Law, Sales, Secured Transactions, and Amateur Sports Law. Jim also spent two summers teaching Sales at Vilnius University in Lithuania. Jim currently serves as an Adjunct Professor at Wake Forest School of Law, where he teaches Sports Law.


Beyond his professional practice, Jim is actively engaged in his community. Jim is in his second term as a City Councilman in Belmont, NC. He is also Mayor Pro Tem and has served as the city’s acting mayor since August 2024. His leadership extends to various civic boards, including economic development, planning and zoning, and downtown revitalization initiatives. Jim is also a passionate fan of Wake Forest sports, especially football. Between 2000 and 2019, Jim attended 246 consecutive Wake Forest football games, home and away, and still attends as many games as possible. Jim also enjoys traveling with his wife, Nicole, and has visited 42 states and over 25 European countries.


Jim holds a J.D., magna cum laude, Order of the Coif, from Wake Forest University School of Law, where he served as Notes and Comments Editor for the Wake Forest Law Review. He earned his B.A. in Political Science, with highest distinction, from the University of Michigan.

GUESTS:  The guest fee is $35.  Guests must be registered in advance by a member.  Guests who are in good standing at another region's Estate Planning Council must register, but are not required to be sponsored by a member.

CANCELLATIONS must be received by e-mail as noted above by 12 Noon, Monday, November 3rd.  Failure to cancel by this date will cause you to be assessed a late penalty of $35.00
